The Sony Xperia 1 VIII is a smartphone that has undergone a significant redesign, but still retains the signature Sony quirks. It's a tall and skinny chocolate bar-style device with an undisturbed display on the front, void of any punch hole. The phone's body is made of glass and aluminum, with an IP65/IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The display is a 6.50" LTPO OLED with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR BT.2020 support. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset powers the device, along with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The camera setup has been switched around a bit, with a 48MP wide, 48MP telephoto, and 48MP ultra-wide angle lens. The front camera is a 12MP sensor. The battery is a 5000mAh unit with 30W wired and 15W wireless charging support. The phone ships in a simple cardboard box, without any USB cable or SIM ejector tool. The design of the phone is a radical new look with a sloping edge on one side, and a matte, rough finish that feels very grippy. The Xperia 1 VIII is a solid upgrade for Sony fans, but it's not a major departure from the previous models. Personally, I think the phone's design is a step forward, but the lack of major internal changes may be a disappointment for some. The camera setup is a nice upgrade, but the overall experience is still very much a Sony phone. The phone's performance is expected, but the design and camera upgrades make it a compelling choice for those looking for a premium smartphone.
